Phone VoIP and Free Internet Softphones
Article By: Richard Keir

Phone VoIP and free Internet softphones are the rage these days. Even if you have to pay for IP telephony service (i.e., phone to PC and PC to phone) your provider should allow you free PC to PC calls. (If not, get a provider that does. There are many to choose from!)
Voice over Internet Protocol, the technology that sends your voice over the Internet as if it were data from a website or e-mail, is no longer limited to a fixed telephone line. It now also works with a mobile phone.
In fact, mobile phone giant Nokia has smart phones that are voice over IP enabled so you can make calls without using up your minutes. The company has also diversified its mobile and soft phone offerings to include the Nokia Internet Tablet, which makes it easier to use phone VoIP and free Internet softphones.
Phone VoIP and Free Internet Softphones - More Freebies!
The great thing about the competition in the booming VoIP market is that providers are rushing to offer more free stuff. What’s more, open source providers are competing with proprietary systems to give softphone, mobile, and fixed line users more free service.
SIPphone (maker of Gizmo), for instance, offers free calls period. If you’re a Gizmo user, you can make free calls to, get this, LANDLINES AND MOBILE PHONES of other Gizmo users throughout 60 countries!
Makes you wonder how long people will still be spending for VoIP service…and what chance companies like Skype have when they offer free services on trial for a limited period only to subscribers.
Unlike proprietary VoIP leader, Skype, the free SIPphone deal won’t expire. SIPphone was founded on an open SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) standard. But why are they offering the IP service free?
The provider believes that firms should be competing on the level and quality of service not on locking in subscribers.
Here’s more good news for the general public. Nokia has truly shown, through products like Internet Tablet (that works great with Gizmo, by the way!), that it’s willing to work with open standards, such as SIP and Linux.
Who knows, in the near future, we may just be able to buy a Nokia phone with a built-in SIP VoIP!
Phone VoIP and Free Internet Softphones - Convergence & Open Standards
It can’t be denied that convergence between all the technologies we use to communicate is here.
It’s also apparent that the market for single use devices is steadily dwindling in favor of multi-use gizmos that, pretty soon, there won’t be much we will NOT be able to do with our phones anymore!
Haven’t you noticed that most new convergence technology nowadays seems to be just PUSHING for open standards? VoIP is one, WiFi is another. This bodes well for those of us who are tired of expensive, crappy service.
