Satellite Internet Phone – If E.T. Had This...

Article By: Richard Keir

Did you know you could get a satellite Internet phone installed even if you don't own a PC? A satellite telephone, linked over the Web, is a purely hardware-based device that doesn't need software to operate. Fax connections are available as well.

Although they offer high-speed connection over the Internet, satellite phones look just like regular phones. Just plug them in and use them. The difference is that a satellite Internet phone, which connects via broadband, can support many of the VoIP products, accessories, and services currently available.

But if you're thinking of using a VoIP product from a vendor other than your satellite Internet phone provider, it's best to have an upload speed of 128 Kbps at the very least.

Satellite Internet Phone - How Does It Work?

Your satellite Internet phone can pick up phone calls dialed to both a regular 10-digit and an 800 phone number. For an outbound call, you can use a long distance service and even phone cards.

A satellite Internet phone is just like a mobile phone because it can be used at a remote location. But rather than depending on cell sites, it uses satellites. When regular phone service is not available in an area, a satellite phone offers an alternative.

However, unlike VoIP using an online PC, a satellite phone is not aimed at saving you money on overseas or long distance charges.

There may be some similarity with mobile phones in terms of sound quality. There'll also probably be a slight delay. If you want to improve quality, your service provider will likely be able to suggest enhancements for a relatively small cost. An example of an add-on to aid quality is the dedicated voice channel that providers offer.

Satellite Internet Phone - Competition from Cell Phones

Satellite telephones don't face the threat of competition from landlines but from cell phones. Companies like Nokia have launched cell phones that allow you to make calls over the Internet without using up expensive minutes.

It isn't hard to imagine that a wireless mobile phone service, portable, cost-efficient beating out the competition from a satellite phone that you'd still have to plug in somewhere.

The new Nokia phone that's Internet-call capable uses Skype, but other providers offer the service as well.

The provider takes your voice conversation and splits it into data packets. This way, it can treat voice as it does e-mail or website data, sending conversations over the 'Net through a WiFi connection. Then your provider reassembles your packets when they reach their destination (i.e., the person you're talking to).

Voice over WiFi is cheaper than mobile phone calls. For example, Skype charges only $30 a year for unlimited use within the US and Canada.
