What to Look for in a Voice Over IP Course

A good voice over IP course combines both lecture (40% or less) with hands on training (at least 60%). However, some programs also offer such a course as a Web-based tutorial or virtual classroom program. A typical starter course lasts from 4 to 5 days, while a more extensive one can last from 8 to 10 days.

Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a technology that is fast gaining ground on traditional telephony systems around the world for two reasons: cost-efficiency and easy deployment.

Mainstream deployment means businesses have seen the need to provide tech support for their IP telephony systems from within internal IT departments. This need drives the market for voice over IP training.

VoIP technology providers have added IP telephony training to their tutorial and certificate course offerings. One example is Cisco Systems Inc., which offers a VoIP training program called CVOICE.

Cisco’s CVOICE
CVOICE offers students the basics of IP telephony so they can gain a genuine understanding of the technology. This voice over IP course also focuses on using Cisco tools to perform daily tasks.

The course delves into technology as it applies to both service provider and enterprise uses. It allows students to apply what they learn in the course and apply it to their specific requirements.

Topics include network architectures, how to build scalable plans, calculating and allocating bandwidth to suit voice/data traffic, designing/maintaining/improving voice quality, security, configuring networks, ports, SIP (Session Initiation Protocol), etc.

Learning Tree’s Hands-on VoIP
Learning Tree International offers a hands-on course for those who want to migrate from traditional telephony to IP. The course teaches students how to maximize the benefits from voice over IP and data integration.

This voice over IP course also delves into the different costs, advantages, and challenges involved in deploying VoIP in networks that involve products from different vendors.

Other topics include interpreting voice over IP industry standards (e.g., SIP, H.323, etc.), configuring IP systems, and designing quality networks that carry both data and voice.

Teracom’s Course 130
The Teracom Training Institute offers Course 130, which focuses on the different aspects of VoIP planning and management, from analysis to sales to purchasing. The Teracom course is based on basic knowledge that is NOT allied to any product of vendor perspective.

This voice over IP course demystifies industry catchwords and jargon so students can learn how voice over IP, SIP, codecs, etc. work. It also includes a survey of what vendors currently offer as well as a comprehensive guide on how to manage a voice over IP project.

Global Knowledge’s VoIP Foundations Course
The Global Knowledge voice over IP course aims to give students all the working knowledge they need in one week. The course uses Cisco hardware to teach IP network configuring and IP telephony.

This voice over IP course uses a 60:40 hands-on/lecture approach so that students can attain proficiency with both hardware and software (e.g., OnDO SIP Server, Asterisk, etc.).

It includes yearlong access to Global Knowledge’s online reference library, which contains material that reinforces what the course teaches students.
